The Wilson County Youth Athletic Association held its October Board Meeting on Wednesday, October 5, at the W.C.Y.A.A. offices in Lucama. The meeting started at 6:30pm with Athletic Director Mickey Davis presiding. Board members in attendance were as follows: Randy McLawhorn, Todd Driver, Leslie Pate, Sherry Edwards, Brenda Pierce, Kevin Brinson, Adam Gardner, Rusty Flora, and Morris Jones. Chris Raper and Richard Evans also attended the meeting.

Mickey opened the meeting by passing out bills for the Fall Season supplies that each community ordered. These supplies include baseball, softballs, and tee-balls. New Hope and Lee Woodard has paid.

Mickey discussed the fact that softball had requested more weekday games for the 2005 Spring Season and that the county had accommodated. That policy will continue in the spring of 2005 but no more dates will be left open.

Mickey passed out the 2006 Select Tryout Schedule. This schedule has also been posted on the web page and will be sent to the Wilson Daily Times Sports Department on Monday, October 10th. The tryouts will not start until after the 2005 Fall Season has ended.

Ezteam has contacted Mickey about on-line registration for upcoming sports. Mickey discussed the matter with the board members and told them to get back with him if they were interested.

Mickey/W.C.Y.A.A. will print registration forms and deliver them to each elementary school and middle school in Wilson County for the communities. They will start going out on Monday, October 10 to the schools. Mickey has asked the Assistant Superintendent Russ Landen for an approval letter for the schools. Mickey will also send out registration forms for the 2005-2006 Basketball Cheerleading Program to each school.

Mickey has sent a letter of complaint to Babe Ruth Headquarters concerning the West Raleigh Program‘s avoiding having two all-star teams. This will be addressed at a Babe Ruth meeting in late October. Also the West Raleigh boundaries will be discussed at the same meeting.

Each community needs to notify Mickey who will be their voter present at the select tryouts at least 4 days before the actual tryouts. The selected voters must be present at ach tryout in order to vote on the players and coach. The voters cannot have any family connection with the players trying out!

Adam Gardner made a motion that players and coaches picked for the select teams that quit the team before the season is over will not be eligible to participate on a select team for the following year. This would be effective October 5, 2005. Bexley Eatmon seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

A motion was also made that in order to be eligible to try out for a select team, players must have played the previous spring starting with the 2006 tryouts for the 2007 season. In addition, players must participate in 90% of regular season and post-season games (end of season tournaments) to be eligible unless there is a approved medical sickness. The motion passed unanimously.

W.C.Y.A.A. Secretary Gay Varnell has written a check to the R.R.Y.A.A. for $633.00 for the 2005 Spring Soccer Season. This is for 211 players times $3.00 per player.

Mickey discussed the problem the W.C.Y.A.A. office is having with players registering and then quitting. Starting with the 2005-2006 Cheerleading Program, players must seek a refund before the last day of registration or no funds will be returned from the W.C.Y.A.A. office.

Important dates for the 2005-2006 Basketball Season are as follows:

First Registration…………………………….October 8, 2005

Last Registration……………………………..October 29, 2005

Paperwork and Fees Due To W.C.Y.A.A…..November 21, 2005

The board agreed on a 10-game regular season with a single elimination tournament in all age divisions for the 2005-2006 Basketball Season.

Mickey discussed the need for a benefit package for the athletic director’s position. Cost of the benefits would be $8,800.00 per year. The position has not carried any benefits since the position’s inception.

The final topic discussed was concerning a motion that was adopted in 2000 that dealt with players playing select/all-star baseball and softball that live outside of Wilson County. It agreed that these players would be allowed to continue to play on W.C.Y.A.A. Regular teams but the players cannot tryout for W.C.Y.A.A. all-star teams.

The next W.C.Y.A.A. Board Meeting will be held on Sunday, October 16, at the W.C.Y.A.A. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the possible benefits for the Athletic Director’s position. The meeting will start at 4:00pm.
