Board Meeting Minutes

For

Thursday, February 15, 2007

The W.C.Y.A.A. Board met on Thursday, February 15, 2007, at the W.C.Y.A.A. offices in Lucama. Those in attendance were as follows: Sherri Bunting (EC), Tim Nicol (EC), Charlotte Taylor (Saratoga), Gay Varnell (LW), Tony Ricketts (Lucama), Leslie Pate (Lucama), Morris Jones (NH), Adam Gardner (LW), Kelvin Brinson (RR), Chris Batts, Tina Wilson, Lisa Terry, and Jay Terry. W.C.Y.A.A. Athletic Director Mickey Davis presided over the meeting.

Mickey asked Morris to contact his 15-17 coach about playing Kenly on Sunday, February 18, at 3:00pm, at the Kenly gymnasium. Morris immediately called his coach and verified the game. ***Mickey called Tim Narron, Kenly Parks & Recreation Director, on Friday morning to set up the game. Mickey will provide the officials and both communities will split the cost of the officials.

Mickey also asked Morris to notify Charlene King about playing her game this weekend at the Rock Ridge gymnasium at 5:30pm. Morris said he would make the phone call.

Tina Wilson (New Hope parent) requested on February 10 to be on the agenda to speak about coaches conduct at 5-6 co-ed games this season. Tina gave Mickey a copy of her talk (Mickey gave each board member in attendance a copy). Tina was given five minutes per W.C.Y.A.A. board policy.

Mickey gave the board members of a list of the elementary, middle, private, and Christian schools he had delivered registration information to. He has also delivered registration notices to each day care center in Wilson. The list of schools is as follows:

Registration notices for baseball/softball, volleyball, and soccer were delivered to the schools and day care centers for ages 3-12.

Mickey went over the required baseball and softball paperwork that is due on Friday, March 9. This includes the individual sheets, roster sheets, out of county fees, and $20.00 fees. Mickey asked the board members to make sure that the paperwork was filled out completely. If paperwork is not correct, it will not be accepted. Copies of the required paperwork will again be mailed out along with the meeting minutes to each board member.

The W.C.Y.A.A. office will open on March 9th from 8:30am to 5:00pm.

Mickey discussed the Buddy Ball Program that he is working on. The Wilson County Schools, Wilson County Social Services, and the Wilson County Health Department are all assisting him in getting the information out to all children ages 5-20 that meet the criteria for Buddy Ball.

Mickey asked the board members about players playing on outside select/all-star teams and then wanting to play on out regular season and select/all-star teams. A player must play in 90% of the W.C.Y.A.A. regular season games to be able to participate on W.C.Y.A.A. all-star/select teams plus if a player misses a regular season W.C.Y.A.A. game, he/she cannot participate that weekend on a select/all-star team.

Discussion on the 70/50 changes to the 11-12 Cal Ripken Major Baseball Program followed. A motion was made by Adam Gardner and seconded by Morris Jones that the 70/50 rules be used during the 2007 W.C.Y.A.A. Spring-Summer 11-12 Cal Ripken Major Baseball Season. This new set up will feature stealing (like high school) and will require the pitchers to work from set position at times. Mickey will show the 11-12 coaches a tape before the season starts on the balk rule. The motion passed 9-0. It was agreed that each community must use the same portable mound for 11-12 baseball play.

Mickey has made contact with a man from Morehead City that makes portable pitching mounds. The mounds sell for $500.00 each. Mickey will make a trip next week and asked for volunteers to travel with him. Morris Jones and Adam Gardner both volunteered to travel with Mickey to check out the portable mounds.
