The W.C.Y.A.A. Board met on Wednesday, February 8, 2006, at the W.C.Y.A.A. Offices in Lucama. Representatives in attendance were as follows: Richard Evans, Leslie Pate, Rusty Flora, Ernest Wilson Jr., Morris Jones, and Kelvin Brinson. Athletic Director Mickey Davis presided over the meeting.
3-4 Co-ed Instructional Division Cut Off: Players must be 3 years old by March 1, 2006, or they cannot play this year. Also, the cut off for the Cal Ripken Divisions (Baseball 5-18) has been changed to April 30. Softball remains December 31.
Mickey discussed the Golf Tournament. Each community is to obtain 8 teams and have them signed up by March 10th. Mickey has two teams and 2 hole sponsors. Saratoga has 1 team and 1 hole sponsor at the present time.
Mickey reminded the reps that they are to meet on Sunday, February 12, at the W.C.Y.A.A. offices at 6:00pm to finalize the tournament. This year’s tournaments will be played at only tow sites. The sites will be Elm City Middle School and Lucama Elementary School. The tournament age divisions will be played as follows:
Elm City Middle Lucama Elementary
5-6 Co-ed 7-8 Boy’s
10U Boy’s 10U Girl’s
12U Girl’s 11-12 Boy’s
13-14 Boy’s 8U Girls
15-17 Boy’s
Each site will have 26 teams participating. Championship games will be played on both Saturday, February 18, and Sunday, February 19. Schedules will be posted on Friday, February 10th on the web page.
***Each home site is to call Mickey on Saturday night with game results and also on
Sunday after each game so he can update the standings.
Admission fees for the tournament: $1.00 for all adults including all coaches. Kindergarten through high school will pay 50 cents each. Players in uniform with a game at a particular site will be admitted free at that site.
The W.C.Y.A.A. will purchase trophies for the regular season champions and the tournament champions.
Mickey reminded the reps to make sure that their players and coaches understand that if a player is voted onto a select team and then quits, he/she cannot try out for a team the next year.
Mickey gave the following updates about the 2006 14 Year Old Baseball World Series:
BB&T announced this week that they will be a Gold Corporate Sponsor for 2006. That will mean a $10,000.00 donation. Mickey thanked Harold Williams, Matt White, Ashley Hooks, and Steve Hart for their help in securing the donation. The picture for the paper and check will be made in the next week or so.
Also, as of February 7, the World Series players and the W.C.Y.A.A. office staff had sold a total of $9,000.00 in ads for the World Series program. Dr. Joseph Russell Jr. will also serve as a bronze corporate sponsor.
Mickey is to stop by the Wilson Daily Times on Thursday am to talk with the sports department about the baseball/softball registrations and the gold tournament getting in the paper. Also, Mickey has spoken with Wayne Johnson, Advertising Manager, about getting W.C.Y.A.A. action pictures in the paper each week. Our pictures will start with the upcoming baseball, softball, volleyball, and soccer seasons.
Mickey told the reps that the father of Wendy Pittman passed away this week. Wendy’s husband, Kirk, coaches at Lee Woodard and also serves on the L.W.Y.A.A. Board. Mickey will order flowers on Thursday from the W.C.Y.A.A. Please keep Family in your thoughts and prayers.
The Babe Ruth State Meeting is still scheduled for Saturday at the Bill’s BBQ Convention Center. The meeting will start at 9:00am and end at approximately 4:00pm.
Any interested baseball parties are urged to attend.
Mickey discussed the select tryout information. The 10U Girls had eight players try out while the 12U Girls only had 4 players tryout.
