2008-2009 Basketball Rules

5-6 CO-ED AGE DIVISION

 

EACH PLAYER MUST BE AT LEAST 5 YEARS OLD BY AUGUST 1, 2008 TO SIGN UP AND PLAY ON A 2008-2009 W.C.Y.A.A. TEAM...THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS

 

  1. One referee will be used at all times.  End of Season Tournament may use two referees in the Semi-Finals and Finals.
  2. Teams will play full court only. New Rule For 2008-2009 Season!
  3. Each game will consist of four (4) eight (8) minute quarters.
  4. Each team will get three time outs per game that may be used at any time.  Left over timeouts will carry over to any overtime period.  Each team will get one (1) extra time out for each overtime period.
  5. Each overtime period will last three (3) minutes.  The overtime period will start with a jump ball.  The 4-6 Co-Ed division will play the maximum of two (2) overtimes per game.  After two (2) timeouts, a tie will be called (Exception: Tournament games).  The game will be completed only if it decides a divisional championship.
  6. The clock will stop only on foul shots and in the last two (2) minutes of each half like a normal game.
  7. The 8-foot, 6-inch goals will be used in this age group.
  8. There will be a jump ball at half court circle to start the game. New Rule For 2008-2009 Season!
  9. Each player must play at least half of the game.  This means sixteen (16) total minutes have to be played by each player.
  10. Each player gets five (5) fouls per game.
  11. If a team is fifteen (15) or more points ahead, the team cannot press outside the three-point line.  If this rule is violated, the team is warned the first time and then given a technical foul each time afterwards.  The technical foul is against the bench and not the Head Coach.
  12. There can be one coach at the time on the floor.  The coach cannot be more than four (3) feet on the floor but can go the full length of the court on the sidelines. All other coaches must be on the sideline at his/her team’s end of the court and not on the baseline.  In the 4-6 Co-Ed Age Division, more than one (1) coach can stand during live ball play.
  13. A team can start with four (4) players but must finish with at least four (4) players or a forfeit will be called.
  14. EJECTION RULE:  If a player, coach or fan is ejected from a game, he/she will not be allowed to participate in the next two (2) games or practices during that time.  Also, the player, fan or coach must immediately leave the gymnasium after being ejected from the game.  Two (2) technical called for unsportsmanlike conduct will constitute an immediate ejection from the game.
  15. Each game will have a five (5) minute halftime and one (1) minute between quarters.
  16. After the first game on a given day, there will be a five (5) minute warm up period before the next game unless the goals have to be changed, then it will be a ten (10) minute warm up period.
  17. Free throws will be one (1) and one (1) on the seventh (7th) team foul and two (2) shots on the tenth (10th) team foul.
  18. No three (3) second call will be used.
  19. Any baskets scored in the wrong goal will not count towards either team. Possession of basketball will go back to the team that scored in the wrong goal. New Rule For 2008-2009 Season
  20. Each offensive team will get a free in outside of the 3-point line. If ball is thrown inside of the 3-point line, then the defensive team may gain possession of the ball. New Rule For 2008-2009 Season
  21. Ball brought in bounds will be passed in from outside of three point area as near the foul or where the ball went out of bounds as possible. New Rule For 2008-2009 Season
  22. The 10 second call will be made in the 5-6 co-ed age division. This means that each team will have 10 seconds to get the ball down court and past the half court line without any pressure from the defensive team. New Rule For 2008-2009 Season
  23. Substitutions can only be made on dead ball situations.
  24. Fouls will be called as in a normal game.
  25. No three-point shots will be allowed.
  26. Inside the painted area, all traveling and double dribbling will be called.  Inside the paint means at least one (1) foot in the painted area.  Outside the painted area, traveling will only be called if a player runs with the ball excessively.  As long as the player dribbling the ball attempts to dribble, either with one (1) hand or two (2) hands, or starting and stopping the dribble, no violation will be called.
  27. Defense must stay inside the three-point circle until the last two (2) minutes of each half, the defense can play defense to half court unless they have a fifteen (15) point lead.
  28. The 4-6 Co-Ed Age Division will use the junior basketball, 27.0.
  29. Players on the free throw line cannot leave until the ball hits the rim.  The free throw shooter also cannot leave the line until the ball hits the rim.
  30. The five-second closely guarded call is in the 4-6 Co-Ed Age Division.
  31. The “O” tolerance rule is in effect for all age divisions.  Technical fouls will be called immediately on the following:  finger pointing and trash talking.
  32. All uniforms must be tucked in his or her shorts and pulled up to their normal positions.  Coaches and players will be warned before each game.  If a player has his or her shorts pulled down or shirts pulled out, the Referee will take the player out of the game at the next dead ball.  The player will be allowed to re-enter at the next dead ball.  There will be no technical foul this season for this violation.
  33. JEWELRY RULE:  NO jewelry may be worn during warm-up sessions or during the game by any player.  If caught wearing jewelry during the game or warm-up period, the Referee(s) will take the player out of the game at the next dead ball and he or she cannot return until the next dead ball.  There will be no technical foul called this season for this violation. ***Jewelry also includes hair beads or hard clasps. ***Earrings cannot be taped over.
  34. Score sheets must be turned in to the host site.  Make sure that each player’s first and last names are on the score sheets and properly spelled.  Circle the players that you would like listed in the paper and on the web site.  Make sure to total all points for each player and place the totals in the correct area. Please list your team’s full name along with any sponsor.
  35. Score sheets must be turned in to Mickey Davis’ office by 7:00 p.m. on Sunday night or may be faxed by 7:00 p.m. to 239-1840.  No score sheets will be accepted through email.
  36. Any player not listed on a score sheet at the start of a game will not be allowed to play.  If a player plays and is not listed on the score sheet, that player will receive a technical foul and then disqualified from the game.
  37. A single elimination tournament will start the week after the regular season ends.
  38. If a player is suspended from school for any reason, then he or she is not eligible to participate in W.C.Y.A.A. practices or games.  Example:  A player is suspended from school on a Thursday and cannot go back to school until Monday, that player cannot practice or play any games until he or she goes back to school on Monday.  If he or she plays while suspended, his or her team will forfeit the game(s) they participated in.
  39. All overtime periods are three (3) minutes each.
  40. The 8-foot, 6-inch goals will be used in the 4-6 Co-Ed Age Division.
  41. Free throws in the 4-6 Co-Ed Age Division will be shot from the semicircle in the painted area.
  42. All head and assistant coaches must be certified in order to help coach in game situations. If a coach is caught not certified in a game situation, his/her team will forfeit their game automatically.
  43. A SINGLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT WILL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOW THE END OF THE REGUALR SEASON.
